ANTH 3240 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Louis Althusser, Judith Butler, Identity Formation
Document Summary
Ideology represents the imaginary relationship of individuals to their real conditions of existence. Think about how ideologies affect and shape our lives. Society makes the individual in its own image. Social practices shape the way that we are. Tells us what our personalities, limits and capabilities are. Ideological practice - comes from a variety of institutions called ideological state apparatuses, or isa"s. We are shaped according to these ideological practices. How we are able to perceive of ourselves is not a given byt learned through established social practices. Identity may be an illusion, but it is an illusion that works for someone people in a way that it does not work for others. Isa"s about sex, gender and racial differences determine what identities and authorities are available to who. The stakes of ideology are different depending on what position one occupies in the class structure, in terms of racializing practices and in terms of sexuality, disability ect.
