Even before the war nazi nuremberg laws had deprived german jews of their civil rights (1935) and storm troopers had wrecked their businesses and places of worship. But the war provided the opportunity for the final solution of what the nazi"s called the jewish problem . After poland"s defeat , it"s 3 million jews were sealed into walled urban ghettos. Special extermination units accompanied the german army into the soviet union where thousands were shot and hastily buried dead or alive in mass graves. Heinrich himmler was the head of the ss,. Himmler called on modern technology to create the extermination camps. Opened in 1941-42 with a-kind of production line for death including specially designed gas chambers and crematoria. Into these camps the nazis slowly empties the rest of europe to the east never to return. They continued to kill jews even while on the brink of defeat.
