Teachers" knowledge: necessary but not sufficient for effective teaching. Clarity: most promising behaviour for effective teaching. Warmth and enthusiasm: most strongly related to student attitudes. Pygmalion effect (self-fulfilling prophecy): no basis for teacher expectations but student. Sustaining expectation effect: when students show improvement but the teachers don"t eventually performs better because he is expected to do so change their expectations. Pygmalion effect stronger in earlier grades and sustaining expectation in later grades. Expectations drawn from: test scores, gender, knowledge of siblings, permanent records, activities etc. Unfounded expectations given to teachers: only had an effect in the early years and new. Naturally occurring: underestimated kids get double threat; low expectations and worse school setting teaching. Grouping strategies can have a very negative effect. Easier questions, less time for answering, less prompts vs. Harder questions, more time, more prompts and smiles. Beginning of the year planning is particularly important. All levels must be coordinated (year, term, unit, week, day)
