Document Summary

Psychology is: study of behaviour and the factors that influence. Pysch explores the causes for our behaviours and feelings, our motives and thoughts. Use a variety of research methods to test theories. Basic research: knowledge purely for its own sake. Applied research: designed to solve specific practical problems. Example of research: robbers cave experiment and the jigsaw. Robbers cave summer camp competition between boys at camp increased hostility and distrust forcing them to work together dissolved boundaries between groups. Applied research: took knowledge from the robbers cave experiment and created the jigsaw program. Applied jigsaw program in classroom where students of different backgrounds must work together to succeed. Goals of psychology: describe how people/animals behave, explain/understand the causes, predict how people will behave. However, it"s possible to predict without understanding. All 4 can be seen in robbers cave experiment. Apply not just to science, but also to life.
