NUR 80A/B Lecture 5: Fall Week 5 - Scrutinizing Quantitative Research Design
Document Summary
Fall week 5 - scrutinizing quantitative research design. The choice of design depends on the beliefs/worldview of the researcher, the research question and research goals. Seeks to describe, explain or predict by quantifying (counting, measuring) Ex: an experiment is done to measure the impact of counseling on smoking behaviour. Ex: a descriptive study using a survey is done to measure patients" attitudes towards hospital food. Interventions (treatment, if any) protocols sample size measurement tools setting before the study starts. Differ from non experimental studies in one key respect: researchers are active agents rather than passive observers. Manipulation - experimenters do something to the participants in the study. Control - experimenters introduce controls, including the use of a control group. Randomization - experimenters assign participants to control or experimental groups randomly: quasi-experimental. Also involve the manipulation of an independent variable.
