Document Summary

Do we expect on average if mutations are deleterious, neutral or beneficial : debate in literature right now. In general we don"t expect them to be beneficial. Sea elegans (experiment: can sequence most of the genome, all genes are known and identified, reproduces asexually and sexually. In this experiement they wanted mutations to accumulate in sea elegans and compare it to a line of sea elegans where no mutations accumulated. By looking at their fitness level in the end (whether it has gone up or down) we can decide if the mutations are beneficial, neutral or deleterious) Then they created a second set of treatment where selection does occur. In the control situation, natural selection is occurring, removal of deleterious mutations. Their fitness stays the same as before because they have already adapted to the environment. Fitness is measured by survival to sexual maturity, no change in survival to maturity over time.
