Changes in attitudes toward the host culture. Cultures are not homogenous entities --> cultures are not as clear-cut as we may think. Acculturation --> the process by which people migrate to and learn a culture that is different from their original (or heritage) culture. Research on acculturation is pretty much scattered about --> the literature is not very coherent. Acculturating individuals all have different experiences: different reasons for immigrating --> fortune or fame; refugees; studying abroad etc. Overall: -->there are few commonalities between acculturating individuals. One clear, agreed upon issue: moving to a new culture involves psychological adjustment. Immigrants --> those who intend to move permanently. The feel of experiencing novel things wears off. Realize that they"re language skills are not strong enough to be fully functional in their new environment. Homesickness becomes pretty strong at this stage. Language abilities improve --> allows for better functionality in the new environment. Better able to make longer lasting friendships with the locals.
