Indole test one of the ways which tryptophan can be broken down. one way is tda - tryptophan deaminase produce indole pyruvic acid and ammonia y. Indole pyruvic acid interacts with therric chloride go brown instead of yellow. some bacteria like protease use tryptophan deaminase whereas other enterobacteria like e coli produce indole . Indole and pyruvic acid: react with kovacs to give colour, can differentiate between enterobacteria that uses one versus other. M is methyl red gives you mixed acid fermenters. V is vp test gives acidtoan product. Have these tests can differentiate lot of enterobacteria, which are otherwise, difficult to differentiate from ea h other.
