Document Summary

Soc 214 exam questions: describe the different type of families common in canada today, focusing on their key characteristics. Explain why they are different from conventional nuclear families. Conventional nuclear family consists of a breadwinner/head of household man married to a women who is a home maker: there are different legal arrangements present upon separation. Consist of a man and women living together who may or may not have children. No right to live in family home, whoever owns it gets it. But also different in this regard because of the fact that they require extra legal provisions. Women are more likely to be in the labour force, so that allows them to have more. If one person dies, things go to blood relatives, not partner (can have written agreement to override these rules) seen as two separate people, not as a union of one: relationships have more gender equality economic independence.
