Nationalism implies the existence of a nation - that people might think of themselves as part of a nation rather than a subject to the king or part of a religion for example. Common language, geographical aspects (same region, borders etc. ), ethnicity, religion culture are potential bonds that can unite people together in identification with a particular nation. The effects of colonial rule (imperialism) y y y y y y y y. Desire for independence and experience of being ruled can d rive a country to want to be self-ruled. Borders created by imperialism help draw the line between different countries. For example, the idea of indonesia as an entity distinguished from other regions are a product of imperialism. During imperialism, economy was structured to benefit the mother country rather than the colony fuelling desire to be in control of economy to benefit colony instead.
