Normal development: children learn speech and language by listening to others. In absence of hearing speech and language don t develop normally. First few years: critical in terms of speech and language development. If a hearing loss exists during this time won t get full benefit of language learning experiences: early diagnosis and early screening is important. screening in infants = required relatively recent instalment in ontario: deafness and communication disorders = intertwined. In the first few months: babies react to loud sounds with a startle reflex.
