Document Summary

Ch 6: credible sources and appeals to experts. In order to make a reasoned judgment, we need to have a criteria for determining what makes a source of information credible. 7: the appeal to authority is weakened, if there is not an expert consensus of a claim. Has the expert had an opportunity to review relevant information before giving an opinion? (experts need to put their minds in the topic at hand) Is the expert trustworthy and free from bias? (the funding or commitment an expert has to a field, can weaken their credibility) Has the claim in question been subject to peer review, or is it from a peer reviewed source? (false claims and bad arguments can be found this way) Does the expert supply plausible arguments or explanations for his or her pov? (we should be able to understand why the expert holds their pov and not just accept it)
