Today: y 4 types of research designs: experiments (associated with quantitative research, cross sectional studies (could be either quantitative or qualitative, longitudinal studies (could be either quantitative or qualitative, case studies (associated with qualitative research) y. True experiments y rare in sociology, more common in psychology y. sample of individuals involved might be selective. findings may not be generalizable to the kinds of people not in the experiment (ex: in this experiment middle class children) findings may be unique to the setting and enviornment of the experiment. findings may not apply to other time periods, either in the past or in the future (experiment was conducted in the 1960 s: reactive effects of experimental arrangements. findings may be invalid because of a lack of naturalism (neither the teachers or students knew the experiment was occuring)
