Document Summary

Cue approach to depth perception, focuses on identifying information in the retinal image: e. g. occlusion, a cue that one object is in front of another, we learn the connection between cues and depth through previous experience. Useful up to a distance of about arm s length, with convergence being more effective. Work with only one eye and includes accommodation, pictorial cues, and movement- based cues. Range of effectiveness of different depth cues: all: occlusion, relative size, 0-2 metres: accommodation, convergence, motion parallax, 2-20 metres: motion parallax, relative height, 30+ metres: relative height, atmospheric perspective. Sources of depth information that can be depicted in a picture. Occurs when one object hides or partially hides another from view: only indicates relative distance, not absolute distance. Objects that are below (above) the horizon and have their bases higher (lower) in the field of view are usually seen as being more distant.
