Each plate carries a continent/ ocean basin. The two plates move away from one another and molten rock rises to fill the gap: results: mid-oceanic ridge forms and new maherial is added to each plate, active (active volcanoes and earthquakes happening) ex. African and north american plate boundary and mid-atlantic ridge. Ocean-continent: dynamics: oceanic pate sinks beneath continental plate, results: mountain ranges and a subduction zone are formed with a deep trench. earthquake and volcanic activity are found ex. Nazca and south american plate boundary andes mountain/ peru - chille trench. Ocean-ocean: dynamics: older denser oceanic plate sinks, results: a subduction zone is formed with deep trench, ex. Continent-continent: dynamics: neither plate is dense enough to sink into the asthenosphere - compression occurs, results: a large high mountain chain is formed and earthquake common ex.
