Time y observe more or less at one time or over a long period y plays many roles in design and execution of research y affects generalizability of research findings. We want to have some beginning and end measurement. It is more difficult for quantitative studies, such as large studies, it is more suited for qualitative studies. There are many types of studies that can be conducted. y cohort study-following a group through a period of time y trend study- examination of changes in a population over a period of time y. Three types of longitudinal studies y cohort and trend studies uncover only net changes y panel studies give full picture of shifts among variables y all three have advantages over cross-sectional studies: Provide information describing processes over time y advantage comes at a cost time and money(especially in a large scale survey) y longitudinal studies not always practical or feasible.
