Formal ex: formal declaration of something, that all individuals be treated with dignity and respect. But we have all experienced that just because someone says we are equal, but that is not always the case. equally. This is why we have substantive equality, this ensures we are treated. Udhr presupposes the universality of tautological (circular, its already given in the premise) , common sense principles. It aspires to universalize claims about what we would all like to be true re: human dignity. But there is a gap between what everyone knows and what everyone should know. How do we overcome this gap: slaughter suggests that it is a matter of literacy and legislation. (ex: we are taught hr in literature and law) Makes them a legal entity/body (ex: rights bearing) People become able to be blamed for discrimination and they can blame others for discrimination. Ascribes to the person, social mobility and a capacity for liability and responsibility.
