The science of psychology has come to very, very long over the past few thousand years. Science has always been contextualized in a larger set of societal/historical/political/ideological/ economic processes. For a long time theological/religious barriers impeded the process of physiological sciences. Direct study of human body was forbidden. Doctrines regarding human exemptionalism (therefore was impossible to learn about human biology through animal studies) Post enlightenment , the rise of the supposed rational, self-interested human; deep divide between cognition and emotion; emphasis on the individual as the unit of analysis. Our first set of motivation is self-interest then the rest follows through. Post biological revolution and neuroscience> re-merging of cognition and emotion; emphasis on interdependence between the individual and the group. Proposed a systematic account of the body as a machine, physiological processes described in terms of mechanistic interactions, controlled by hydraulics (fluids) and mechanics (levers) Thus human and animal bodies were complicated machines, consisted with the mechanistic zeitgeist of time.
