Document Summary

The layering of society in different levels. Certain occupations contribute more to society than others. To motivate these people to undergo these trainings and sacrifices, high rewards must. Some occupations require more training and sacrifices (time and money) be awarded. If judges and janitors are paid equally, no one would undergo training and sacrifices (no motivation required) Therefore, stratification is necessary; it performs a useful function. Case 1: killer virus kills only doctors. Serious negative consequences but society can continue to live. Case 2: killer virus kills only farmers. Farmers are more important in these two cases. If we didn t have people historically doing these unimportant jobs we would have doctors and judges. There is a relationship between the landowners and the peasants (certain % of the goods or earned money had to be given to the landowners) The ability to live depended/came from the surplus labour of the peasants. 13th century, surpluses where used to institute higher living.
