Preference hedonism: what pains/pleasure have in common is their relation to our preferences and desires. An experience is pleasant if it is preferred (about our present state of mind; introspectively discernible). Problem: imagine preferring that it is better for me to not be deceived even if i am being deceived and don t know it. It is irrelevant that my belief is false because it doesn t affect my experiences. The problem is that it is better to believe than to not be deceived. Unrestricted: fulfillment of all my desires throughout my life. Success version: we should only count desires about one s own life. Deception, even if i don t know about it, is bad for me.
