Document Summary

Chapter 10 changing work roles and the family. The determining factor in decisions concerning family issues such as marriage, divorce and fertility is whether the benefits exceed the costs. Marriage is encouraged by a number of factors; it makes possible the specialization and exchange that potentially increase the couple"s productivity and economic well-being. As women have been acquiring more job-oriented education and training, their market productivity has increased relative to their home productivity. From this perspective, rising female labour force participation is expected to result in lower marriage rates. This is, women are no longer pressured to choose between employment on the one hand and marriage on the other. Working in the same direction, some sociologists argue that some men may prefer women who can make a larger contribution to family income. Another factor receiving quite a bit of attention as possibly affecting trends in marriage rates is the role of income support available outside of marriage, such as welfare.
