Each state has research station w funding to examine rural society: canada didn t have this, weaker substitute. Kinship, religion, education, law, politics etc in the rural and small town context. Attention paid to how rural and urban differed: lived in rural context, diff from today. Compare society to biological organism w diff structures w diff functions. If all work, is healthy, if one doesn t work, unhealthy: model predominated by 1950s. Earlier more of a reformist approach to soc research: clergy involved in early rural soc endeavours. Malnutrition, extreme poverty (espesh during great depression) , mass unemployment, issues w farmers problems w monopolistic railways etc. Approach one of looking at consensus around issues. Rural canada didn t get much attention from social scientists, started later (after ww2 [50s/60s]) structure matters b/c could sell wheat to make $ to buy things in the marketplace.
