Document Summary

Lecture 8: planetary properties: terrestrial planets: mercury, venus, earth and mars (all have atmosphere except for mercury, earth and mars rotation is almost the same, venus and mercury rotate much slower. venus rotates in opposite direction: earth and mars have moons, venus and mercury, earth and venus have magnetic fields but venus and mars does not. Interplanetary orbits: comets: icy with some rock parts, 1-10km in size and made of truly primordial material, comets are from outer reaches of solar system. Lecture 9: overall layout of the solar system: overall solar system is flat, all planets and asteroid orbit in a common direction, sun rotates in the same rotation, how did the system for, nebular contraction. cloud of gas and dust contract due to gravity; conservation of angular momentum means it spins faster and faster as it contracts.
