Document Summary

The preganglionic nerves are cholinergic, that is, they secrete the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. The postganglionic nerves use norepinephrine: 2)the 2nd type of sns response is a little less direct. In the sympathetic/adrenal medulla sam system, the sympathetic nerves radiate to the adrenal medulla which is a small structure lying atop of the kidneys. If prolonged, this process decreases circulating blood volume. Modern theories: we now know that there are individual differences in stress reactions. Surprisingly, the overall relationship btwn stress and cancer in humans is weak: there are cascading relationships between genetic and environmental factors that result in individual differences in vulnerability to stress and risk of disease. Positive physiological changes: a study showed that mice and rats subjected to electric mild shock matured more quickly than their nonstressed peers. Infant handling in rats led to better growth patterns and resistance to future stress.
