Method of investigation: controlled experiment y advantage: provides context for addressing whether or not an effect is real and which theoretical account explains it- cause and effect y disadvantage: eliminate other sources of influence. We want to know these other influences: participant observation y researcher becomes an observer and participant of the situation and learns the dynamic of the setting. They become one of the people that is trying to influence others. 25$ attached, others received the questionnaire saying they would get a cheque if they finished the questionnaire. They found that individuals were more likely to complete the questionnaire when the cheque was already attached y cialdini & et al. : door in the face technique (reciprocal concessions procedure) students asked to chaperone juvenile delinquent to the zoo for one day- 80% said no. Then students were asked if they were willing to give 3 hours of their time for the next 2 years to help juvenile delinquents.
