First appeared on greek mainland around 1400-1200 bc. Public spaces, public works: a reorganization of settlement of daily life, courts, entrances, streets, drainage, urbanism, evidence for labour. First palaces we see are: knossos, malia, phaistos, interconnect - similar in many ways, key aspect is centered court with series of wings centered around court, all oriented in same way, all at the heart of large towns. Ritual view": theatral area, looks like later theaters, public space, at foot of major road called the royal road", royal road lined with houses, space for public gathering but not quite in palace, north entrance passage. Separate wings around central court: large-scale monumental megastructure, coherent architectural unit, oriented n-s, central courts and west court, each wing multi-roomed. Some people want to scrap calling this a palace and resort to calling it a temple. Italian dig: problematic as all publications in italian, oriented to sacred cave of kamares.
