Document Summary

The thoracic cage includes the vertebral column, the ribs, and the sternum. Sternum: lies in the anterior midline of the thorax. It is formed by the fusion of three bones manubrium, body, and xiphoid process. The superior end of the manubrium is the jugular notch. The clavicular notches of the manubrium articulate with the clavicles superolaterally. The manubrium also articulates with ribs 1 and 2. It is attached to the body at the sternal angle. The body articulates with costal cartilage of ribs 2-7. The body is attached to the xiphoid process at the xiphisternal joint. The manubrium and rib 1 articulate to form the thoracic inlet. The thoracic outlet is enclosed by the diaphragm. When we inhale, ribs move up and out. Ribs get larger from 1-7, then get smaller from 7: 1-7 (true ribs) have costal cartilage at point where they interact with sternum. Ribs 8-10 don t have own attachment to sternum.
