Vpmb94 chapter 6 swing: the early 1930s to the late 1940s. Swing emerged during the 1930s & early 1940s. Played by bands of ten or more musicians. Swing style jazz attached dancers due to its rhythmic properties. Characteristic swing jazz: instrumentation was big band instead of combo. Instruments were grouped into 3 sections: rhythm, brass & saxophone. 2 to 3 trombones is the standard, can be up to 5. Lead musician sat in the middle of the section. Increased use of written arrangements due to growth of big bands. Melody was played by entire band in unison. Riffs: short, simple phrases, assigned to each section and played against each other. Rhythm guitar style: strumming a chord on each beat. Pianist sometimes played melody instead of chord & embellishment. Chord is played on every beat or every other beat. Two-beat style: played on first & third of every four beats. Jimmy blanton from ellington"s band played pizzicato bass solo.
