Swing style jazz attached dancers due to its rhythmic properties. Characteristic swing jazz: instrumentation was big band instead of combo. Increased use of written arrangements due to growth of big bands. Melody was played by entire band in unison. Riffs: short, simple phrases, assigned to each section and played against each other. Rhythm guitar style: strumming a chord on each beat. Pianist sometimes played melody instead of chord & embellishment. Chord is played on every beat or every other beat. Two-beat style: played on first & third of every four beats. Jimmy blanton from ellington"s band played pizzicato bass solo.
