Cool jazz refers to modern jazz that is softer & easier to follow than bop. Several chord changes in a single measure, complex improvisation. Original choice of notes, composed of notes a step or half step away from notes in the chord. Long strings of uninterrupted eighth notes, interspersed with sixteenth notes. High density, virtuosic piano sound, no relaxation of tension. Dry, airy tones that was soft in texture & light in weight. In the style of tristano"s densely packed piano improvisation. Trumpeter miles davis & arranger gil evans organized recording session of nine-piece band known as birth of cool band. Most came from big band in los angeles. 2 and 3 moving parts were presented simultaneously. Saxophone passages in long strings of sixteenth notes. Sounded loud due to large brass section, emphasis on massiveness. Harmonized parts for trombone that were smooth & light. Hired unknown writes & commissioned compositions that had little chance of commercial success.
