Document Summary

For a consequence to be most effective as a reinforcer, it should occur immediately after the behaviour occurs. If the time between the response and the consequence becomes too long and there is no contiguity, the consequence will not have an effect of behaviour. example: when you tell a joke and nobody laughs immediately, you are less likely to tell that joke in the future: contingency. A behaviour is strengthened when a reinforcer is contingent on the behaviour (when the reinforcer occurs only if the behaviour occurs): establishing operations: events that change the value of a stimulus as a reinforcer. Ex: food is a more powerful reinforcer for someone who hasn t eaten recently. deprivation: a type of establishing operation that increases the effectiveness of most unconditioned reinforcers and some conditioned reinforcers. satiation: makes a stimulus less potent as a reinforcer.
