HIS102Y1 Lecture : HIS359 - February 8 - Dominican Republic.docx
Document Summary
The massacre hasn"t really been included in scholarly thought until the last few years. Shows a direct relation between dictatorship and scholarship. There has been a lot of scholarship on haiti but you have to look hard before 1990 to find a lot on the real duvaliers. In the case of the dominican there are many aspects of the history that wasn"t written about. It wasn"t until there was a democracy that there has been a boost in scholarship. Was almost a gapping hole because there wasn"t any writings. There is an intense focus on the massacre that is unsettling for some dominicans. The 1937 massacre was a major event in the international community. It was overshadowed by other political events in the world. One of the longest serving dictatorships in the caribbean. Afterwards it sort of disappeared from the minds of the people in the caribbean even though when he was in power his name brought fear.
