Document Summary

Nationalism and liberalism are 2 of the things that the congress of vienna was trying to stop from happening. Arose from the upheavals of the end of the 18th century. Rise and the powerful appeal of nationalism has confused people. In the 1840s, marx was issuing prophecies about the demise of nationalism: thought that the worker"s revolutions would get rid of it. Was not a fundamental category of belonging nor a claim to political sovereignty. In the modern era it usually refers to a population with characteristics that bind it together. The communities weren"t created with the modern idea but the idea re-shaped them. Nationalism was the doctrine that the community focused on through political loyalty: the nation is the primary organizer is the new idea. People began to argue that each "people" had a right to its own government and/or state: undermines the old order, loyalty to a ruling dynasty.
