Experimentation: correlations will show us where a causal relationship possibly exist, breastfeeding and cognitive abilities. If we want to prove that they do correlate, cause one of the other, we need to do an experiment. Just seeing the correlation cannot make that assumption, yet we need to run an experiment. In this case we know which one came first, the breastfeeding came before. However, in the other case we don"t know which one came first (depression or self esteem?: socioeconomic status: meaning an individual has more of an education - could cause breast feeding. You don"t get to choose what group you are going in: groups are going to be different also based on socioeconomic status. And that"s why we randomly assign people to groups: this is what they do for psychological therapies, people will be randomly assigned to behavioral theropy, drug therapy, etc. They will measure your level before and after.
