Space doesn"t matter because of the way in which capitalism has evolved. How should we think about space if place does not matter anymore. Idealized notions of place : inhabited by communities sense of security in these places: community and place are taken to be co-terminus, reactionary notions of place (xenophobia) Keeping others out resulting in different kinds of mobility. Can place be progressive and outward looking? (central question: query time-space compression (its ethnocentricity and causes, formal definition of time-space compression on page 147. Does everybody experience time-space compression and if so how: different experiences of space and place between people.
