1st persian war 490: darius sent naval reinforcement to restore hippias as ruler and establish expansion and thus take over greece, 6400 of the persian forces were met with 10000 hoplite persians. January 26 slaughtered to 292 of hoplite forces: quick march back to athens to defend the city. An army to large and diverse to be effective. Army was dependant on the navy the navy could not be permanently at sea, dependant on the army to protect it during nights affixed to land. The undermining of one half of the arm was the undermining of all: greece"s landscape allowed the greek army to use the landscape against the persians, 480: Artemision first naval battle persian victory, but lost many ships to storm, and delayed the army. Salamis naval battle, in the straight between the attic mainland and the island of salamis effective in neutralizing persian numbers.
