Author returned to el barrio in 1994 and found that primo had quit drugs and drinking for three years. However, government was trying to collect money he borrowed for maintenance engineer training he did (school went bankrupt and never gave primo the certificate) Separated from maria, but has close relationship with their child primo jr. Second son papito stayed with him after sandra"s boyfriend beat him. Maria lost subsidized housing and gets support from primo sometimes, but its monitored by family courts who deduct the amount from her food stamps. Caesar no longer sells drugs, but still has crack binges: still receives ssi payments and beats wife carmen and children. Candy no longer sells drugs or works: nurse"s aide program led her to job where they scam insurance, lives with felix who works construction off the books to continue getting welfare. Candy"s son junior went to jail, fathered two children and is in and out of drug dealing, smokes marijuana.
