Document Summary

Anterograde amnesia - ability of making new memories was affected. Often the past memories are retained (retrograde amnesia) In 1933, henry m. had a bicycle accident and was unconscious for 5 minutes. Three years later he began to have minor seizures. By 21, he would have 10 minor attacks per day and 1 major per week. In 1953 (henry was 27), dr. scoville performed a bilateral medial temporal lobe resec- tion. Seizure activity was greatly reduced but he developed a major loss of memory capaci- ty. Lived with his family for a while but then transferred in a nursing home. Never asked for food or beverage, or to go to bed. H. m. memory disorder was selective in five important ways: higher-order perceptual, motor, and cognitive functions not affected. Normal language: lost the capacity for new learning. Normal delay conditioning, normal acquisition and normal extinction. If you use trace conditioning where there is a small delay he was completely impaired.
