Document Summary

Note: cellular respiration occurs (at least partially) in all living things. Energy released from downhill (exergonic) reactions used to drive uphill (endergonic) reactions. Catabolic pathway: breaks molecules down, free energy is released, overall exergonic reaction(overall 0> g), but not necessary each step has a negative g, ex. cellular respiration. Anabolic pathway: builds molecules, free energy is consumed, overall endergonic (overall 0< g), but not necessary each step has a positive g, ex. photosynthesis and biosynthetic reactions. Energy to change adp+pi to atp comes from catabolic processes. Amount of atp synthesized in body = gigantic. Use energy released from atp adp + pi used to drive anabolic processes. Food has: lots of c-h bonds (c-h bonds have lots of energy, and its easy to take electrons from c-h bonds, ex. glucose and octane. C6h12o6 + 6o2 6co2 + 6h2o: redox reaction.
