Marginalized urban men can"t replicate rural ideals of masculinity and family structure. They retreat into the drug economy because they are unable to replicate their rural ideals of masculinity. They want to be able to control and support but can and therefore lash out. Their search for respect is undermined because they can"t get a job and can"t earn the respect. They deny their vulnerability by lashing out at ppl that are vulnerable so that they can gain the respect that they need. They lash out at women and children. Street economy is misogynist, and glorifies sexual conquest, sex crimes, and paternal abandonment. Women in el barrio were trying to gain freedom. The women were no longer content to stay home. Candy calls it an attack of nerves.
