South doesn"t want reform, reason why it failed: failure to redistribute land, didn"t like the idea of sharecropping, etc. 14th and 15th amendments: give african americans citizenship and the right to vote, infuriates the south, responds with groups such as the kkk (aimed at keeping blacks inferior) Panic of 1873: economy in trouble, start to worry more about the economy rather than reconstruction, resurgence of southern power: redeemer power. Compromise of 1877: democrats in charge of both the house of representatives and the. Senate: compromise that rutherford b. hayes (republican) become president in exchange for removal of troops from the south, leads to jim crow laws and segregation.
