Additional class: burakumin; outcasts (hinin; nonhumans, eta; pollutants) 1871: liberation edict of august: meiji government outlaws the term eta and hinin; designated them as new commoners. 1903: greater japan fraternal conciliation society formed to help burakumin take action themselves to eliminate discrimination: fails to develop, similar group formed again in 1955. 1975: buraku activists found out that major companies were finding out which people were burakumin based on where they lived, and then refusing them jobs: similar discovery in 1987. Edo: 2nd largest city in the world in 18th century with population of just under 1 million. A lot of other cities started to grow to provide for edo as well.
