March 8th lecture - reasoning, judgement, and choice. Neo-gestaltist view: when we solve insight and non-insight type problems we have different feeling of our progress. Participants solved insight problems and incremental problems. Insight:10 pennies into 5 rows of 4 pennies in each. Every 15s, participants indicated their "feeling of warmth" i. e. closeness to the solution. Non-insight - feeling of closeness increases gradually with time. Insight - feeling of closeness is minimal until the very end, when the solution is suddenly found, can"t feel progression , emerges as a whole. Some answers require "aha" experience and others can be solved by linear type of process fmri was used - insight requiring problems had differential brain activity. Eeg study suggesting that "insight" experiences are a culmination of a series of brain states and processes culminating at different time points. E. g. mutilated checkerboard - has two white corners removed.
