Document Summary

Crucial that research is conducted in an ethical manner: as a society we are sensitive to ethical questions. Standards for writing wasn"t established until 1953: because there was ambiguity, there was inherently very high level of trust, people trusted psychologists --- got in the way of development of the formal code. Our ideas of what"s right & wrong are socially constructed. In our culture we give a great deal of power to psychiatrists to decide if a certain behaviour is normal or not. Our ethical code as a social construction will reflect the values of our culture: variation across cultures and overtime. We are a lot more sensitive to the rights of individuals. Standards influenced by variables that are important in our society: stereotypes. Doctor can ask family if person communicated anything about his wishes. Or did patient live choice to a person.
