Values which can be incommensurable: cannot be measured on the same basis. When people break the law, it"s either yes or no. Either/or questions are important because they inform you about what you should do or what. Do you pay the price for something or not -> yes or no you should not do. Both/and -> you can break the law but you"re also a good person. What is legal and what is illegal is a concern. What is the value of the transaction in economic terms. For karl marx, labour is not to be measured quantively as pure time spent in work (economic value/adam smith) Instead labour is to be discerned in the quality of the act, with respect to ethical value rather than economic value. Economic value: intrinsically negotiable, about market price, measurable. Range of commodities that can be purchased have expanded: sex, votes, parenthood, genetic information.
