Document Summary

Positive strand rna viruses picornavirus = small-rna-virus. Replication occurs through incoming genome transcribed into antigenome that is transcribed into genome ssrna viruses. For some ssrna viruses, the rna can be immediately read as a mrna by the cell ribosomes: positive strand rna viruses: do not carry rdrp into the virion, ex. Enteroviruses, rhinoviruses, hepatoviruses are members of the picornaviridae family. For other ssrna viruses, the genome is complementary to the mrna and is synthesized complementary rna that direct protein synthesis: negative strand rna virus: poliovirus. Replicates in epithelial cells of gastrointestinal and upper respiratory tract. After infection, host has acquired immunity against reinfection. Getting infected at younger age, protected by maternal antibodies etc. Getting infected at later age, which occurred because of cleaner water, the disease is different than if infected at younger age. Polio vaccines: salk killed vaccine, injected, triggers production of humoral immunity, protects against disease, but not infection. Safe because inactivated no infectious virus.
