Document Summary

How does energy flow through global ecosystems. Ecosystem: consists of all the organisms living in a community as well as all the abiotic factors that affect them, range from a microcosm. Energy from sun and radioactive decay in interior magma drives processes that move materials around planet. 4 physical environments can be divided into four compartments. Land: compartments and types of organisms living in them are very different. Pathways by which energy and nutrients move through the biological components of an ecosystem. Grazing food web: producer, herbivore, secondary consumer trophic levels. Detrital food web: detritivores and decomposers. Aesthetic enjoyment: these services are either not available through technology or they are prohibitively expensive. Regardless of an ecosystem"s size its dynamics involve two main processes. Ecosystem viewed as: transformers of energy. Flows through ecosystems: energy is conserved, processors of matter. Cycles within ecosystems: matter is conserved. Moving up trophic levels: ecological efficiency.
