The glottis can open by rotating the arytenoid cartilage. They bring about closing of the glottis by pulling the muscular processes forward and pushing the vocal processes together. Intrinsic muscles of the larynx involved with opening and closing of the glottis: 1. Posterior cricoarytenoid o is posterior surface of laminae of cricoid cartilage, i is muscular process of arytenoid cartilage, action is abducts vocal fold. Lateral cricoarytenoid o is arch of cricoid cartilage, i is muscular process of arytenoid cartilage, action is adducts vocal fold. Transverse and oblique arytenoids o is one arytenoid cartilage, i is opposite arytenoid cartilage, action is closes glottis by approximating arytenoid cartilages (pulls cartilages together to close glottis posteriorly). Intrinsic muscles of the larynx involved with vocalization: 1. Cricothyroid o is side of cricoid, i is lower border/inferior cornu of thyroid cartilage, action is tenses vocal cords. Thyroarytenoid (vocalis) o is inner surface of thyroid cartilage, i is arytenoid cartilage, action is relaxes vocal cords.
