What is cerebral palsy: cerebral = of the brain , palsy = lack of muscle control, a non-progressive neuromuscular disability, affects movement and posture. A group of disorders of the development of movement and posture, causing activity limitations that are attributed to non-progressive disturbances that occurred in fetal development or appear in the first 3 years of life . Cerebral palsy is. : not contagious, not hereditary, and not life threatening. It is estimated that cp affects: 1 of every 500 babies, up to 1 in 3 premature babies, affects 50,000 canadians. It is difficult to state and exact number of individuals with cp. Risk factors: anything that increases chances of premature birth such as smoking and alcohol. Idiopathic: multiple births, damaged placenta, maternal infections, rh incompatibility, expose to toxins/chemical or radiation, maternal diabetes/ or high blood pressure, anemia, maternal age. At birth: premature birth (32 weeks or less) Low birth weight: abnormal position of the baby during delivery.
