Document Summary
Self-concept: cognitive component of the self, personal attributes. Self schema: traits that people use to define themselves, different for each person, schematic. Where does self-knowledge come from: self-perception: look at own behaviour. Introspection: looking inward and directly consulting our attitudes, feelings, and motives: autobiographical memories: story we tell about ourselves, social environment. Social environment: reflected appraisals: gain self-knowledge by observing how others respond to us. Imagine how we appear in the eyes of the other person. Imagine how that person is evaluating us: we feel good or bad in accordance with this imagined judgement. Self esteem: affective component of the self, extent to which an individual likes, values, and accepts the self. Low self esteem refers to less positive (not necessarily negative) views of the self: self esteem tends to be associated with positive outcomes. Self discrepancy theory: higgins (1989): self esteem is defined by the match between how we see ourselves and how we want to see ourselves.
