ARH312Y1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Colluvium, Lithostratigraphy, Lower Paleolithic
Document Summary
The analytical process by which an archaeologist or geologist attempts to put sets of sediments into their correct order of deposit. Geological vs. archaeological stratigraphy: lithostratigraphy largest scale, large processes that created the layers. Types of sediments: soil stratigraphy how soil is developing, different types of soil, archaeological stratigraphy how it relates to human actions, broken by time periods. Incorporating artifacts and historical remains along with litho and soil stratgphy. Site formation processes: can be fast or slow, avalanche creates fast deposits, alluvium (sediments deposited by water) can build up slowly. Deposits can be therefore single events or built up over long periods of time: can be environmental or anthropogenic. Stratigraphic components: strata (deposits or layers) accumulation of material identified through its physical properties. Surfaces and the removal of material, i. e. , the cut of a pit: features upstanding strata, human-made.
